Growing popularity of donor-advised funds is changing philanthropy

“It’s an instrument that works really well for the donor, said Maxwell King, CEO of The Pittsburgh Foundation, which manages about 1,000 DAFs valued at $330 million — up from about 500 accounts totaling $111 million in 2009. “I have no reason to think that it won’t continue in popularity,” said Yvonne Maher, the foundation’s executive vice president for development and donor services. “This year, we’ve already raised $40 million in new money, and I think that we’ll continue to grow.”

Pittsburgh Creche organizers hoping to raise enough funds to endow display

The Christian Leaders Fellowship has set up the endowment fund at the Pittsburgh Foundation, which is administrating it. The principal would be kept permanently in the fund, according to the plan, with the interest used to meet the estimated cost of up to $70,000 to transport and set up the creche. The DLM Foundation is offering to match up to $200,000 in donations through March 6, according to the Pittsburgh Foundation.

Kamal Nigam

Kamal Nigam joined the Foundation's Board of Directors in December 2018. He is the executive director of The Hear Foundation, the first and only nonprofit in Pittsburgh dedicated exclusively to collaborating with community leaders, Pittsburgh Police, residents and the City to create a safe, thriving community for all. Previously, Nigam was the co-founder and site lead for Google’s 750-person Pittsburgh office.

Reverend Glenn Grayson

Reverend Glenn Grayson joined The Pittsburgh Foundation Board in 2019. In December 1996, he joined the Wesley Center AME Zion Church and for 20 years he has been a hands-on minister with a heart for uplifting the disenfranchised in his community.  In 2002, he founded the Center that C.A.R.E.S., located in the heart of Pittsburgh’s Hill District, which serves more than 2,500 students and their families.

William Generett Jr.

William Generett Jr. serves as the senior vice president of civic engagement and external relations at Duquesne University. He oversees the University’s office of community engagement, its government affairs function and the office of corporate and foundation relations. Prior to assuming this role, he served as president and chief executive officer of Urban Innovation21, a unique entrepreneurship and community based economic development focused public-private partnership.

Laura Ellsworth

Laura Ellsworth joined The Pittsburgh Foundation Board in 2019. Ellsworth, currently at the international law firm Jones Day, has been in practice for 40 years as a lawyer. Born in New York and raised in New Jersey, she moved to Pittsburgh to attend law school in 1980 after graduating from Princeton and started her career at Buchanan Ingersoll. In 1992, she took a job at Jones Day, where she climbed the ranks and eventually became the head of the firm’s Pittsburgh office, and its first partner-in-charge of Global Community Service Initiatives.
