The Pittsburgh Foundation

Nelson Adult Blind Fund

Established: 10/1/1981

Dr. Lyle Nelson was longtime resident of Squirrel Hill and a physician of 50 years. He died on July 6, 1985, at the age of 84.

As a doctor, he specialized in internal medicine and cardiology, serving on the staffs of West Penn and Shadyside hospitals; he also had a private practice. During World War II, he was Chief of Medicine at the U.S. Naval hospitals in Pensacola, Fla., and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

The fund was established in Lyle's memory by his wife Martha Lazear in 1981 after Martha transferred a private charitable fund to the The Pittsburgh Foundation and renamed it The Nelson Adult Blind Fund. Martha has a fund in her name with the Foundation. She died December 31, 1986, at the age of 86.

The fund primarily supports programs and training for the rehabilitation of blind adults who do not qualify for government assistance.
