Local writers to be honored at Carol R. Brown Creative Achievement Awards

Two local writers with insightful worldviews are being recognized for their literary contributions. Adriana Ramirez and Cameron Barnett are the winners of this year’s Carol R. Brown Creative Achievement Awards. They’ll be honored Dec. 9 during a public program at Point Park University’s Pittsburgh Playhouse. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the ceremony begins at 7 p.m. featuring a musical performance by Bernice Johnson Reagon and her daughter, Toshi Reagon. The accolades — named for Carol R.

A tool to meet the government's tax rules on IRA distributions but also boost a charity

In the spirit of the holiday season — and the tax season that follows right after — some high-income senior citizens who can afford to donate money are using a loophole that allows them to make bigger charitable contributions. The planning technique known as qualified charitable distributions is a way to beat the tax system, helping those who have reached the age of 70½ to make cash donations directly from their individual retirement accounts to IRS-approved charities.

On Media: Post-Gazette Guild members withhold bylines to draw attention to working conditions

The Newspaper Guild’s byline strike at the Post-Gazette is entering its third week, and it’s getting harder to not notice. Unlike a strike in which employees stop working, employees in a byline strike continue to create content but they withhold their names. So far, the union says its members have withheld more than 657 bylines from stories, photographs and other content in the print and digital editions of the newspaper, not counting the website, mobile app or PG NewsSlide.

Jaime Guerrero's sculptures show the faces of the refugee crisis

He continues his work with youth in affiliation with Casa San Jose, a community resource center which coordinates actions and serves as a support base for recent Latino arrivals to the region.

Pittsburgh adopts UN Sustainable Development Goals

Mayor Bill Peduto attended the United Nations Climate Summit as a representative of the nation’s mayors and met with New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio. This includes a key partnership with OnePGH, an initiative from the Mayor’s office started within the last few years. Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), The University of Pittsburgh, Chatham University and the Pittsburgh Foundation, a local non-profit, have been considered leaders in regional sustainability projects.

Utopia or Oblivion exhibition at Bunker Projects takes a colorful approach to addressing technological concerns

Utopia or Oblivion, a new solo exhibition by local artist Kevin Clancy, is now on view at Bunker Projects and while light and color are main elements- the themes of the show are less than light and happy. Clancy is a recipient of an Investing in Professional Artists grant, a partnership of The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Heinz Endowments.
