Supporting Organizations

Individuals and families can establish a supporting organization at The Pittsburgh Foundation with a gift of approximately $2 million, or a transfer from an existing private foundation. The trustees of supporting organizations can focus their time and effort on the important work of grantmaking, leaving the burdensome administrative, accounting, reporting and tax filing tasks to the Foundation’s expert staff. Because The Pittsburgh Foundation is not subject to the excise taxes and other restrictions imposed on private foundations, a greater percentage of charitable dollars goes directly to nonprofit organizations serving the community.

One supporting organization of The Pittsburgh Foundation, The Forbes Funds, provides outstanding services to the region’s nonprofit community. Another supporting organization, The Pittsburgh Partnership for Neighborhood Development (PPND), engages public, private and nonprofit organizations in supporting the development of diverse, tolerant, mixed-income “communities of choice.”
