William H. Feller and Edna B. Feller Scholarship Fund The William H. Feller and Edna B. Feller Scholarship was established at The Pittsburgh Foundation by their son, Robert L. Feller Ph.D. to honor his parents and the fact that he received his primary scholastic training in the Linden Public School System beginning with primary school on Wood Avenue at the foot of Gibbens Street through Junior High and graduation from Linden High School in the class of 1937. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1941 with a major in chemistry and received his M.S. degree from Rutgers University, New Brunswick in 1943. During WWII, he served in the Navy from 1944-1946, where he ended up his service teaching sonar and other electronic instrumentation at the Naval Training School at Navy Pier, in Chicago. Following discharge, he returned to Rutgers where, upon receiving his Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry in 1950, he accepted a newly established position at Mellon Institute in Pittsburgh, PA, sponsored by the National Gallery of Art and Pittsburgh’s Mellon institute to conduct research on the deterioration of paints, pigments, and varnishes. Over the next thirty eight years until his retirement in 1988, he became internationally known, receiving many honors for his numerous studies on the aging of varnishes and the fading of pigments, in parts summing up in books “On Picture Varnishes and Their Solvents”, “Accelerated Aging”, and “Artists Pigments”, the latter the first of a four-volume series published by the National Gallery of Art. There were also a number of joint publications with his wife, Ruth Johnston Feller, a well-known expert in color science.
