Joseph Horne Company Trust for the Benefit of Employees

Established: 1/8/1973

Horne's was an iconic regional department store chain based in Pittsburgh. Founded in 1859, it is considered to be among the first and oldest retail chains in the country.

Founder Joseph Horne was born in Bedford County. While his father wanted him to become a physician, Joseph insisted on going into the retail business and was soon made a Partner in the F.H. Eaton store. He bought the store in 1949, at the age of 23, and renamed it The Joseph Horne Company, a name that carried on for more than 130 years.

Horne's opened its first store on Market Street in Pittsburgh that same year and later moved to Penn Avenue and Stanwix Street, a seven-story landmark building that displays the Horne's name to this day. Several partners joined him, including Christian B. Shea and A.P. Burchfield (who also has a fund with the Foundation).

The chain ceased operations in 1994 after it merged with Lazarus, a division of Federated Department Stores Inc.

Income from the fund was initially used for the support, maintenance and welfare for the payment of medical and hospital expenses and to otherwise alleviate the distress of employees, former employees and members of immediate families of the Joseph Horne Co. Today the fund is unrestricted with an emphasis on meeting health and welfare needs.
